Evening concerts at Palazzo Doria Pamphilj: Baroque instruments vs. soloists

Concerts
Two concert products, and the music is the point of both. One is an evening of Baroque repertoire played on original instruments in the Secret Apartment of the Princess, capped at a small audience. The other pairs a short guided walk through the Secret Apartments with a concert by a female ensemble. Both are billed as a tour plus a concert, and on both the tour part is brief — reviewers say so repeatedly. Book either because you want to hear music in a palace, not because you want to see the gallery. For that, buy a plain ticket.
€99 Baroque concert (premium)Original Baroque instruments, max 25 people
€48 opera arias & rooms (budget)Female ensemble, solo soloists, 6:00pm start
Location (both)The palace, Secret Apartment of the Princess
Duration€99: 1.5–3.5 hours (+ dinner option) / €48: 1.5 hours
Rating (€99)4.5 from 32 reviews
Rating (€48)3.8 from 7 reviews (smaller sample)

The honest difference: the apartment tour is short on both

Both listings promise a tour of the Secret Apartments and then a concert. The tour part takes about 30 minutes in both cases and covers four rooms. Reviewers on both consistently say the same thing: the rooms are interesting, but the real draw is the music. The €99 concert has a bigger sample size (32 reviews, 4.5 stars). The €48 concert is newer (7 reviews, 3.8 stars). Both sell the apartment tour as part of the evening, but the apartment tour is the appetizer, not the main course.

The premium concert: €99, Baroque instruments, max 25 guests

1.5–3.5 hours depending on options. Live concert on original Baroque instruments—soprano, transverse flute, baroque guitar, theorbo. Held in the Secret Apartment of the Princess. Guided tour of the apartment (about 30 minutes), then the concert. Maximum 25 guests (the intimate-venue draw). Standard or VIP options; both come in versions with a three-course Roman dinner afterwards at a restaurant near Piazza Navona (water and wine included, one bottle per two people).

4.5 rating from 32 reviews. Reviewers praise the musicians and the venue. One thought it was too short and wished it lasted longer. One expected a bigger gallery visit and got a small apartment tour and a concert instead—read the facts above to avoid that disappointment.

The budget concert: €48, opera arias, 6:00pm

1.5 hours. 6:00pm guided tour of the Secret Apartments (about 30 minutes), then welcome drink, then 6:45–7:30pm concert by soloists of the Romaeterna Cantores Female Ensemble under Maestro Aurelio Porfiri. Does NOT include the gallery, transport, or food. The opera arias are the product; the apartment is context.

3.8 rating from 7 reviews—the lowest-rated option on this site. The pattern is clear: people like the music but are disappointed by how little of the palace they see. One reviewer wrote: “Only a tour of the children’s and parents’ bedrooms. It’s a shame they don’t show more of the house.” Recommend this only to someone who books it for the concert and treats the rooms as a bonus, not the other way around.

Both include the same thing

Both tours cover the Secret Apartments (about 30 minutes), the same four rooms, the same 19th-century frescoes and private libraries. The Secret Apartments are not the same as the Private Apartments in the main gallery. Both concerts start in the evening and assume you do not want a full day in the palace—if you want to see the paintings and the concert, buy an entry ticket separately or book a morning guide and come back at 6:00pm.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Secret Apartment of the Princess?

Ground-floor rooms in the palace where the family entertains. Different from the Private Apartments in the main gallery. About 30 minutes and four rooms, decorated with 19th-century frescoes, private libraries, rare maps. Read the full difference between Private and Secret Apartments here.

Is the concert the main event or the apartment tour?

The concert. Both listings sell the apartment tour as part of the evening, but reviewers consistently say the music is what you came for. The apartment tour is about 30 minutes. The €99 Baroque concert (32 reviews, 4.5 stars) and the €48 opera arias (7 reviews, 3.8 stars) both have the same structure. Pick by the music, not the rooms.

Which concert should I book?

If you love Baroque instruments and want an intimate 25-person venue: the €99 concert. If you prefer opera arias and want a lower price: the €48 concert. If you want to see the main gallery paintings: book an entry ticket instead—neither concert is a full palace tour. Read the decision guide.

Why is the €48 concert rated 3.8?

Small sample (7 reviews). But the pattern is consistent: people liked the music but were disappointed by how few rooms they saw. One reviewer wrote the apartment tour only covered the children’s and parents’ bedrooms. Book this for the music, not for a comprehensive palace experience.

Does the dinner option come with the €48 concert?

No. The €48 concert is 6:00–7:30pm with a welcome drink included. The €99 concert has optional add-ons: dinner at a nearby restaurant (three courses, water and wine included, one bottle per two people) for an extra cost. The €48 listing does not mention a dinner option.

Can I see the gallery paintings and then the concert?

Yes. Buy an entry ticket in the morning, spend as long as you want in the galleries, then come back for the 6:00pm concert tour and music. The two bookings are separate. Or book the €99 concert, which includes the apartment tour but not the gallery itself.
